Set during the time of World War 1, “120” tells the story of 120 youths aged 12 to 17 who volunteer for a difficult journey to carry ammunition on their backs through deep snow and mountains. The movie is based on a tragic period of the Turkish history, written by Özhan Eren who composed the music as well.

The number “120” in the recent Turkish movie refers to the number of children from the city of Van who volunteered to carry ammunition to the Sarıkamış front, where the Ottomans fought the Russians in World War I. “120” was directed by two directors, Murat Saraçoğlu and Özhan Eren, an expert on the Caucasus campaign in World War I. He came across the story of the 120 boys while doing his research for his bestselling “Sarıkamış'a Giden Yol” (The Road to Sarıkamış).
The movie begins in June 1914, when the Ottoman Empire was just letting out a sigh of relief at the end of the first Balkan war. The location is the eastern city of Van, where the locals are healing the wounds of war. The only problem is the Taşnak gangs in the region.
At the center of “120” is a young woman, Münire (Özge Özberk). She becomes the ideal narrator, functioning as a link to three generations of men in the town. She is the daughter of the high school principal, Cemal (Emin Olcay), sister of a martyr in the Balkan Wars, engaged to Lieutenant Süleyman (Cansel Elçin), and the elder sister of two young boys, Mehmet and Mustafa. There is even a link to a fourth generation, as Münire's grandfather was an Ottoman veteran from the previous century.
Soon World War I erupts, and the Ottomans take their place in the war as Russia attacks the eastern border of Sarıkamış, heading for the city of Erzurum. Most of the men in Van leave the town to help the soldiers on the front, with a few staying behind to defend the town from regional gangs.
It would turn out to be one of the greatest defeats of the Ottomans in history, with most of the Turks eventually dying from the harsh winter conditions and the army soon starts running out of ammunition. They realize that if the abundant ammunition in Van does not get to the border soon, the capture of the town is imminent.
One young boy volunteers to be part of a group to carry the ammunition, leading to 120 boys aged 12 to 17 becoming the remaining volunteers in this arduous mission. Sergeant Musa (Burak Sergen) leads the fatal mission, where a harsh winter kills many soldiers awaits the boys on their journey to Sarıkamış. ……
…….“120” is very careful not to become another tool for mindless propaganda in the recent nationalist discourses. And neither does it play out as praise of war. It simply tells a sad story, lost to the annals of history. - - Turkish Daily News
