Peter Bogdanovich - They All Laughed (1981)

New York's Odyssey Detective Agency is hired by two different clients to follow two women suspected of infidelity. Ladies' man John Russo trails Angela Niotes, the elegant wife of a wealthy Italian industrialist, while Charles Rutledge and Arthur Brodsky follow Dolores Martin, the beautiful young wife of a jealous husband. Their respective cases are complicated when John falls for Angela, and Charles falls for Dolores.

"They All Laughed" is one of those little movies I am always recommending to friends seeking something out of the ordinary. It is firmly rooted in the screwball romance traditions of the past, but seems more contemporary. Even the decidedly early 80s atmosphere doesn't date it too much. Bogdanovich wisely keeps the whole enterprise so light on its feet, that reality never brings it crashing down to earth. But, that said, this sort of sweet little movie absolutely relies on the actors to keep it going, and "TAL" is blessed with a dream cast who understand the requirements of this sort of tale. It is a movie that wouldn't linger so long in the memory if it weren't for the little moments provided by the excellent cast: Colleen Camp's simultaneously shouting orders at John Ritter and her dog; Blaine Novak unleashing all that hair from under his hat; and especially the moment Dorothy Stratten falls for John Ritter and says, "How...weird." It's such a piece of fluff one doesn't want to lay too much on it for fear of crushing it, but it is certainly does leave one with a light heart and a smile on one's face. (IMDB comment)

La película está basada en un guión de Bogdanovich y Blaine Novak. El tema de la película son los amores secretos y furtivos. El argumento se centra en tres detectives privados que investigan a tres hermosas mujeres por infidelidad, y eventualmente se enamoran de ellas. El detective John Russo (Ben Gazzara) intenta engañar a su novia, la cantante country Christy Miller (Colleen Camp), con una taxista rubia (Patti Hansen), con la ayuda de su colega Arthur Brodsky (Blaine Novak). A la taxista la conoció persiguiendo a Angela Niotes (Audrey Hepburn), esposa de un magnate europeo. El detective Charles Rutledge (John Ritter) se enamora de Dolores Martin (Dorothy Stratten), cuyo marido lo ha contratado para espiarla. Parte del argumento se narra a través de la música, cuyas canciones (un soundtrack encantador predominantemente country, con temas de Roy Acuff, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings y Rodney Crowell) colaboran de manera directa en la descripción de los personajes.

El asesinato de la coprotagonista Dorothy Stratten ocurrió una vez terminada la producción de la película, a manos del ex marido de ella, despechado tras haber sido abandonado por ella, que se fue con Bogdanovich. El estreno demorado de la película redundó en un fracaso comercial que lo dejó en la quiebra. Todos rieron (considerada, entre otros films, como representante del fin del ciclo del “cine de autor” iniciado los ’70 en Hollywood) fue la última actuación protagónica para cine de Audrey Hepburn. Leon Leondopolis, directeur de l'agence de détectives new-yorkaise Odyssey, a bien des soucis en ce moment : son dos, sa femme qui le harcèle au téléphone, sa secrétaire et maîtresse qui le fait marcher. Quand à ses fins limiers, John, Charles et Arthur, ils sont censés filer les femmes des maris jaloux. Mais très vite, Leon s'aperçoit que les jeunes détectives les séduisent !
